Melanistic leopards have been sighted roaming the Dasapalla and Gania ranges of the Nayagarh Forest Division in Odisha, indicating a healthy and growing big-cat presence in the region.
Forest officials estimate that the number of these rare black leopards has increased to around six.
A few months ago, camera traps installed in the forest had reportedly captured visuals of one to two black leopards moving along with their cubs, suggesting successful breeding in the area. Based on recent camera-trap data and field assessments, officials now believe the population has grown further.
Meanwhile, the Forest Department has stepped up vigil to ensure the safety and conservation of the animals. Continuous monitoring of leopard movement is being carried out through an extensive network of camera traps deployed across the Dasapalla and Gania ranges.

Confirming the development, the Nayagarh Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) said that the department remains fully alert and proactive, closely tracking the leopards’ movements to prevent any threats.
“The tiger census is currently going on. The exact number of the leopards will only be revealed after receiving the reports. As per the tracking through CCTV cameras, we are estimating that there are around six to seven black leopards in the forest ranges. The forest officials are patrolling day and night to monitor the situation and ensure protection of the tigers,” said Nayagarh DFO Debarchan Behera.
