Lac bangles emerge as major attraction at Adibasi Mela 2026 in Bhubaneswar

The ongoing Adibasi Mela 2026 in Bhubaneswar is drawing large crowds, with the stall selling traditional lac bangles emerging as one of the biggest attractions of the tribal fair. The mela, which showcases the rich culture, art, and traditions of tribal communities, is witnessing a steady footfall, especially during the evening hours.

Visitors, particularly young girls and women, are flocking to the lac bangle stall, where artisans are crafting bangles live using age-old traditional techniques. The stall has become a focal point of the fair, with long queues forming as customers watch the intricate process of bangle-making and place orders according to their preferred designs and colours.

Artisans prepare a special adhesive locally known as Kusuma chuda and use lac as the primary raw material to shape the bangles. Colours are carefully mixed into the heated lac, giving each bangle a vibrant and distinctive finish. The bangles are handcrafted on the spot, with prices starting from around Rs 100 per pair, depending on the design and detailing.

Explaining the process, one of the artisans said that each bangle requires careful heating, shaping, and decorating by hand. “The process is time-consuming and delicate. Even making a single bangle takes more than half an hour,” the artisan said.
