A low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal, but it is unlikely to have any direct impact on Odisha, weather experts predicted on Tuesday.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the low-pressure system developed around 5.30 pm on Monday over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining east equatorial Indian Ocean. The system is expected to intensify and become more marked within the next 24 hours.
Meteorologists said that during the subsequent 48 hours, the low-pressure area is likely to move west–northwestwards towards the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean region.
However, officials clarified that the system is not expected to influence weather conditions over Odisha directly. There is no immediate forecast of heavy rainfall or adverse weather in the state due to the formation of the low-pressure area.
“The system is unlikely to have any direct impact on Odisha. However, a trough line is approaching northwest India, and under its influence, parts of Odisha may experience light to moderate rainfall on January 10. Coastal and northern Odisha are likely to witness rainfall activity,” weather expert Sarat Sahu said.

“Hailstorm activity may occur in Bolangir, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur and Bargarh districts. Cold wave conditions are expected to continue across the state till January 12,” he added.
