According to sources, a Class VIII student allegedly jumped from the Mahendratanaya river bridge in an attempt to end her life. However, she survived after landing on a sack lying beneath the bridge that contained the body of a dead dog, which had reportedly been dumped there earlier.

Because of the unexpected cushioning impact, the girl escaped fatal injuries. Local youths rushed to the spot, rescued her in critical condition, and immediately shifted her to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Doctors said her condition is serious but stable now. Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led the student to take such an extreme step. Officials are also examining whether any external pressure or distress factors were involved.

The unusual incident has triggered discussions on student mental well-being and the need for stronger emotional support systems for children.

“When my friend and I were returning from our college, an elderly woman told us that a girl had jumped from the bridge. The woman asked us to go immediately and rescue the minor girl. After hearing this, we, along with some locals who were present nearby, brought the girl from the spot below the bridge,” two youths who rescued the victim said.
